Finding an architect, answered.
Everything clients ask us about fees, timelines, approvals and how matching works. Can't find your answer? Get in touch.
How much does an architect cost in Australia?
Architects' fees vary with the size and complexity of your project and the level of service. They're often quoted as a percentage of construction cost, a lump sum, or an hourly rate. The clearest way to understand your real number is to post your project and compare written fee proposals from a few registered architects.
Is Architect Moda really free?
Yes — for clients it's completely free to post a project and compare fee proposals, with no obligation to proceed. You only pay a small deposit when you choose to engage an architect, and that deposit goes towards their fee.
How long does the design and approval process take?
It depends on scope, but a typical residential project moves through concept design, design development, a development application (DA) and construction documentation over several months. Your architect will set out a stage-by-stage timeline in their proposal.
Are the architects registered and insured?
Yes. Every architect is registered with their state Architects Registration Board and carries professional indemnity (PI) insurance. Many are also members of the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA).
What does an architect actually do on my project?
An architect can take your project from a first concept through design development, the DA or planning approval, detailed construction documentation, and on into tender and construction-stage advice. You agree the scope and stages up front in their fee proposal.
Do I need a fully resolved brief before I post?
Not at all. A rough idea of what you want to build, where, and your budget is enough to get matched. Part of an architect's value is helping you shape the brief — and you can attach any plans, photos or inspiration with your project details.
Can an architect help with interiors and sustainability?
Absolutely. Many architects offer interior design and specialise in sustainable or passive design — orientation, thermal performance and materials. Just note it in your brief and we'll match you with architects who suit.
Which areas do you cover?
Architect Moda operates Australia-wide — with strong coverage across Sydney & NSW, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra and regional centres. Architects are matched to you by location and project type. Not sure if you're covered? Just ask.
Do I work with the architect directly after matching?
Yes. Once you've engaged your chosen architect, you work with them directly under their own client agreement. Architect Moda makes the introduction and handles the deposit; the professional relationship is between you and your architect.
Do I need council or DA approval for my project?
Many projects require development application (DA) or planning approval before building can start, though some minor works qualify as exempt or complying development. Your architect will advise what your project needs and can prepare and lodge the application for you.
How does the deposit and payment work?
Comparing proposals is free. When you choose an architect you pay a small deposit through Architect Moda to engage them, which goes towards their fee. The architect's own fee proposal sets out how their remaining fees are staged across the project.
What if I'm not sure which proposal to choose?
Take your time. The proposals let you compare each architect's approach, stages and fees side by side, and you can ask each architect questions before deciding. There's no pressure and no obligation to engage anyone.
